Caputo Bagels held its grand opening on October 5 at 81 Fifth Avenue in Park Slope. It is the work of James, who learned to bake across five generations of a family bakery that operated for more than a century, and his partner Rafi. James is clear that the shop is not a rebuild of that bakery. He says he and Rafi wanted to make something of their own, applying what his father and family taught him in a different way.
The bagels are hand-rolled sourdough, made with a 45-year-old starter. Alongside them you will find cream cheeses, sandwiches, pastries and coffee. One item to try is the Lard Provolone Bagel, priced at $4. The kitchen also turns out open-faced sandwiches topped with smoked salmon, bacon, vegetables, herbs and spreads.
The room is bright and easygoing, with white brick walls, paintings, plants by the window and small round tables for eating in. Hours are 7am to 3pm Monday through Friday and 7am to 4pm on weekends. Delivery and catering are coming soon.
