NY Weekly, Nov 2–8, 2026: Nara's Big Return and Akari at 75
With the marathon and Halloween behind us, New York turns to gallery season. This week Yoshitomo Nara returns to Chelsea with his first major solo here in nearly a decade, and the Noguchi Museum opens its Akari show in Long Island City. We've also flagged two small shows closing soon, a new Ludlow Street restaurant, the Rockefeller tree's arrival, and a few drops worth knowing. Japan-connected picks come first.

Things to Do in NYC This Weekend (Oct 31–1): 7 Picks — Halloween night, then a marathon Sunday
This weekend in New York, the city itself is the main event: Halloween on Saturday, then the 50th year of the five-borough marathon course on Sunday. We picked a night parade, daytime family outings, a Día de los Muertos procession in the Bronx, and a major show of Japanese women photographers for whenever you want a quieter hour indoors.

NY Weekly, Oct 26–Nov 1: Halloween, the Marathon and a Few Quiet Shows
Halloween on the 31st and the marathon on November 1 will crowd the streets this week. Between them, we picked three Japan-linked shows and three exhibitions that close at the end of October. ICP's survey of Japanese women photographers, Ippodo's kana show in iron and mother-of-pearl, and the Noguchi Museum's archive display all suit a calm day. For food, we lean toward a Japanese counter.

Things to Do in NYC This Weekend (Oct 24–25): 11 Picks — Sugimoto's last days, pastries, puppets, lookalikes
This weekend in New York, many Chelsea gallery shows close on Saturday, which makes it the last chance for Hiroshi Sugimoto. Around that, we picked mostly free plans: a pre-marathon pastry table in Greenpoint, an outdoor Coco screening in Brooklyn, a lookalike contest in Washington Square, a jazz tribute in Queens and monarch puppets at the Botanical Garden.

NY Weekly, Oct 19–25: Japanese Photographers, Sugimoto, and a Closing-Week Rush
Many Chelsea and Tribeca gallery shows close on October 24, so this is the week to catch them. Japan-linked picks include Hiroshi Sugimoto, Tomie Ohtake and a new ICP survey of Japanese women photographers. Add two new Japanese-leaning restaurants, free Halloween-season screenings and a few Japanese-label releases.

Things to Do in NYC This Weekend (Oct 17–18): 9 Picks — Dogs, flowers and fall color across the city
This weekend in New York, the best plans are outdoors and a little seasonal. Saturday brings a rescue-dog block party in Hell's Kitchen and the last day of a Nihonga show in Tribeca; Sunday has a plant market in Long Island City. Ikebana at the Noguchi Museum runs just two days, while foliage cruises, a Halloween weekend at the Bronx Zoo, Gowanus studios and a free dog-sculpture show in Central Park round out the list.

NY Weekly, Oct 12–18: A Week with a Japanese Accent
Japan runs through this week's calendar. ICP opens a major survey of Japanese women photographers, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Kaori Someya are in their final days in Chelsea and Tribeca, and the Noguchi Museum hosts a two-day ikebana show. The Whitney Biennial closes today, and Open House New York weekend unlocks the Navy Yard. Add two Japan-linked tables and one sneaker drop, and the week plans itself.
