Emily Mae Smith's second solo show at Petzel presents new oil paintings in which her recurring motifs, including the animated broomstick, grapes and eyeballs, shift into part-human, part-animal, part-plant forms. Drawing on Millet's rural imagery and on the long tradition of the painted female nude, the works consider looking, labor and power. The surfaces are built from thin, layered glazes. On view through October 24.
