Charles Burchfield: Elemental
Charles Burchfield, Overhanging Cloud in July , 1947-59. Watercolor on paper mounted on board, 39 7/8 × 36 in. (101.3 × 91.4 cm). Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; purchase with funds from the Friends of the Whitney Museum of American Art 60.23. Reproduced with permission from the Charles E. Burchfield Foundation and the Burchfield Penney Art Center — Whitney Museum of American Art

Drawn solely from the Whitney's own holdings, this display gathers ten watercolors made between 1916 and 1960 by Charles Burchfield (1893–1967). Meadows, storm skies and changing seasons become charged with emotion and spiritual feeling. The show marks seventy years since the museum's 1956 Burchfield retrospective, and because the works are light-sensitive and seldom shown, it is a chance to see them together. It runs through spring 2027.
