Leaves of Words: Satoshi Nemoto, Tsuneo Nakazawa, Shinya Yamamura

This TriBeCa show follows kana, the Japanese phonetic script born in the ninth century, through three materials. Satoshi Nemoto writes his own waka poems in ink on washi; Tsuneo Nakazawa forges classical verses in iron, casting shadows on the wall; Shinya Yamamura inlays mother-of-pearl into lacquer boxes. Seeing one script move from brush to metal to shell makes for a distinctive comparison. Opens October 30.
