Bar Susanne sits on River Street in Williamsburg, steps from the Brooklyn waterfront, and describes itself as a raw bar, cocktail bar and restaurant devoted to local seafood. The kitchen is led by chef Jackie Carnesi, and the restaurant's own line is that it is "also a pretty good time."

The focus is shellfish harvested in New York. Alongside the raw bar there is a passionfruit ceviche, which pairs bright acidity with fruit. The drinks list leans on low-ABV spritzers, a sensible choice if you plan to linger over a long seafood meal. For dessert, mango sorbet arrives served in an oyster shell, a playful finish that fits the theme.

The restaurant is open Tuesday through Friday from 5pm to 11pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 11pm, so weekends allow a daytime visit after a walk along the river. Reservations are taken through OpenTable.

Next door at 8 River Street is its sibling, Cafe Susanne, serving coffee and cocktails. It is open Sunday through Thursday from 8am to 8pm and Friday and Saturday from 8am to 9pm, handy for a drink before or after dinner. Private events can be arranged through the restaurant's website.
