The International Center of Photography, on Ludlow Street in the Lower East Side, opens "I'm So Happy You Are Here: Japanese Women Photographers from the 1950s to Now" on October 15. The exhibition surveys work by Japanese women photographers from the 1950s through the present day and runs through January 11, 2027.
It opens alongside Laia Abril's "On Rape and Institutional Failure," which shares the same dates. The museum, cafe and shop are closed October 12–14 while the new shows are installed, so October 15 is opening day for both.
The appeal here is the span: several generations of Japanese women working in photography, gathered in one New York gallery. The exhibition's listing is illustrated with Rinko Kawauchi's "the eyes, the ears," a sign that contemporary figures sit alongside the historical ones. For Japanese-speaking New Yorkers, it is a chance to see a perspective shaped in Japan presented at a major local institution.
The museum is open daily from 10:30am to 6:30pm, and until 8pm on Thursdays. Thursday evenings from 5 to 8pm cost $5, which makes a post-work visit easy. The main entrance is at 84 Ludlow Street, and tickets can be reserved through ICP's website.
