Nepenthes New York has released a pair of collaborations from Needles, one with Tailor Toyo and one with Sun Surf. Both went on sale October 4 and are available in store and online.
The Tailor Toyo piece is the first collaboration between the two. The "Souvenir Jacket" starts from a US Navy jacket, which Needles has reworked in its own style. The body is wool, and the label's signature papillon butterfly sits boldly across the back. Embroidery on the jacket names the cities Needles has visited for its visual shoots.
The Sun Surf piece is a Hawaiian shirt. Sun Surf is known for its rayon aloha shirts, and this version swaps in flannel, a better fit for autumn and winter. Needles asked for two butterfly-motif patterns from Sun Surf's large archive, so each colorway carries a different design.
The campaign visuals feature the actor Kenichi Takito as the model.
For anyone in New York who follows Japanese repro-inspired clothing, the collection puts Tailor Toyo's military and souvenir-jacket heritage and Sun Surf's Hawaiian shirt tradition next to Needles' butterfly emblem. The in-store option is Nepenthes New York on West 38th Street in Midtown.
