Anthology Film Archives in the East Village is running "Women in Animation" from October 11 through 15, a series on the many talents of women who have worked in the medium. The programmers are clear that it is not an exhaustive history, but a sampling of artists, some of them long overlooked.
The lineup includes Bessie Mae Kelley's FLOWER FAIRIES, lost to time until recently and the earliest known hand-drawn animated film directed by a woman. Also on the bill are Joy Batchelor and John Halas's THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT and Morton and Millie Goldsholl's INTERGALACTIC ZOO, both from couples who built their own studios. The series also nods to the many women who worked inside the studio system and went largely uncredited.
Two programs remain. On October 14 at 7 PM, Program 2, "On Being a Woman," looks at womanhood from being idolized (THE FIGUREHEAD) to motherhood (BIRTH, PETIT BONHEUR) to life as a woman of the world (W.O.W). On October 15 at 7 PM, Program 3, co-presented with the animation collective Sunflower Lane, brings personal stories of reproductive health (CYCLES), meditations on existence (MY UNIVERSE INSIDE AND OUT) and an animated interview about female friendship (INTERVIEW).
The series was guest-programmed by Rachael Guma and co-presented by WIA. A reception follows on October 15, with vegan treats from Confectionary NYC. Tickets are $14 general and $10 for seniors and students.
