Tone brings together drawings, paintings, photographs and sculptures by nineteen artists, including Roy DeCarava, Lorna Simpson, Kerry James Marshall and Zanele Muholi. The show treats tone, the range from black through white and every shade between, as an artistic language in its own right rather than a mere technical matter. Starting from early photography and black-and-white practice, it asks how light and shadow can build form and rhythm.
