Across New York, museums, galleries and auction houses are opening luxury dining rooms, and the question is whether the food can become as much of a draw as the art. On the Upper East Side, one of the city's long-standing museum cafés is back in the conversation.
Neue Galerie New York, at Fifth Avenue and 86th Street, is devoted to Austrian and German art and design of the early 20th century. Its Café Sabarsky has reopened. The room takes its cue from the great Viennese cafés of the last century, and its menu offers a modern take on Austria's culinary heritage, reflecting the history and allure of the Viennese café. Executive Chef Christopher Engel directs the kitchen.
The café also doubles as a stage. On the evening of November 4, it hosted a performance of Cabaret, and it closed to regular service at 5 p.m. that day to prepare.
The museum itself is mid-installation. All galleries reopen on November 12 with the 25th Anniversary Exhibition, marking the museum's founding in 2001. The show runs through January 11, 2027, and tickets are on sale now. The Klimt Gallery is among the spaces returning.
The museum is open Wednesday through Monday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and closed Tuesday. On select Friday evenings from 5 to 8 p.m., First Fridays offers free admission. The address is 1048 Fifth Avenue.
