Penguin Rep Theatre's The Steel Man is playing at 59E59 Theaters (Theater B) in Midtown East from Nov. 3 through Dec. 13. The play is by Cary Gitter and directed by Joe Brancato, and it is inspired by a true story.
Jake Gellert is trying to break free from the shadow of his larger-than-life father, Leo, a Hungarian Jewish Holocaust survivor. Leo remains consumed by the past and by a desire to avenge the family he lost. Jake, meanwhile, looks for a way to build his own identity and to help his father find peace. The drama takes up legacy, identity and the tangled bond between father and son. The cast is Sam Guncler, Amanda Kristin Nichols and Leighton Samuels, and the production comes from the team behind Gene & Gilda and The Sabbath Girl. Running time is 85 minutes with no intermission.
The theater notes that the production includes discussion of the Holocaust and PTSD, strobe lights and a visible gun. After the 7:15pm performance on Saturday, Nov. 21, Dr. Eva Fogelman, a psychologist and author who specializes in the generational impact of the Holocaust, will lead a post-show talkback.
Performances are Tuesday through Friday at 7:15pm, Saturday at 2:15 and 7:15pm, and Sunday at 2:15pm. Tickets are $54 including a $4 fee, or $40 for 59E59 members. The code SKINT brings tickets down to $29. The Sunday, Nov. 8 matinee is sold out.
Penguin Rep was founded in 1977 by Brancato in Rockland County and is a co-op resident company at 59E59.
