The International Center of Photography on the Lower East Side opened I'm So Happy You Are Here: Japanese Women Photographers from the 1950s to Now on October 15. It runs through January 11, 2027. The exhibition reconsiders and expands the history of Japanese photography through the work of 28 artists across several generations.

The roster includes Fujioka Aya, Hara Mikiko, Hiromix, Ishikawa Mao, Ishiuchi Miyako, Katayama Mari, Kawauchi Rinko, Ninagawa Mika, Sawada Tomoko, Shiga Lieko, Yamazawa Eiko, Yanagi Miwa and many more. Work spans photography, installation, photobooks and printed matter.
The show looks at the experiences and perspectives of women in Japan: delicate and blunt observations of everyday life, critical reflections on the roles Japanese women have inhabited and reshaped, and approaches that push the boundaries of the medium.
It is presented in partnership with Aperture and curated by Pauline Vermare, Lesley A. Martin and Takeuchi Mariko. After debuting at Rencontres d'Arles in 2024, it traveled to The Hague, Frankfurt, London and Tokyo. ICP is its first US stop.
A major Aperture publication from 2024 accompanies the exhibition, with essays, historical material and a comprehensive bibliography of photobooks made by Japanese women. ICP's shop sells it for $75. The museum's main entrance is at 84 Ludlow Street, and tickets are sold through ICP.
