David Zwirner presents an exhibition by Yoshitomo Nara (b. 1959) in Chelsea, the artist's first solo show with the gallery and his first major solo presentation in New York in nearly a decade. It occupies two buildings, 537 West 20th Street and 533 West 19th Street, and combines new paintings and drawings, recent sculpture, and early works chosen by the artist.

Nara has worked since the mid-1980s, and his sensibility traces back to a solitary childhood in rural northern Japan. Nature, folklore, children's fables and the popular music he discovered on a radio he built himself fed his imagination. The big-headed, wide-eyed figures he is known for are, in his own understanding, self-portraits. When they appeared in the 1990s, they were read as raw emotion with the directness of punk and rock. Today viewers tend to see their own feelings and vulnerabilities in them, and the images have become cultural touchstones with a global audience and a strong influence on younger artists.

The 20th Street gallery pairs foundational works from the 1980s with paintings made in 2026. The newly completed canvases are front-facing portraits with direct gazes, and their palette has grown more muted and nuanced over the past year. Diffused brushwork builds atmospheric depth. Another group of paintings follows a new method: Nara draws the composition in colored pencil, then applies washes of translucent acrylic. The figures take natural poses, and their tear-filled eyes suggest uncertainty. Large monochrome drawings made with industrial oil-based paint sticks are emphatically linear. In his "line" paintings, Nara projects and enlarges bold notebook sketches, then redraws them in paint so that the speed and fluidity of the original line remain.

At 19th Street, thirteen of Nara's 10-times sculptural enlargements from 2024 are on view. These bronze heads, coated in matte white urethane paint, grow out of palm-sized clay prototypes and recall the snow "monsters" Nara knew from childhood winters. He was interested in how a small, evidently hand-molded head would feel at monumental scale. Simple expressions and light moving across smooth surfaces encourage a calm, contemplative response.

The opening reception takes place Thursday, November 5, 6–8 PM. It is free and open to the public, and RSVPs are encouraged but not required. The show coincides with Yoshitomo Nara: Sentinels of Stillness at the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC, where three sixteen-times enlargements of Nara's clay heads are on view from October 31, 2026 through November 7, 2027.
