Matthew Marks Gallery's Chelsea space at 523 West 24th Street is showing 101 Drawings, a group exhibition that gathers works by one hundred and one artists across three centuries. The opening reception took place on November 4, and the show remains on view through January 23, 2027.
The earliest work on the checklist is A Standing Beauty (Bijin), an ink drawing from around 1830 attributed to Utagawa Kunisada and described as an Edo-period Utagawa School piece. At the other end of the timeline is Influences, a five-sheet work in watercolor, colored pencil and graphite that Laura Owens completed only months ago, in 2026. Between them, the show moves through nearly every approach to drawing.
The roster runs from Henri Matisse (Vue de la Fenêtre, Tanger I, 1912, ink) and Pablo Picasso (Verre IV, 1914, graphite) to Willem de Kooning (Floating Females, 1966), Jasper Johns, David Hockney, Brice Marden and Joseph Beuys. Bill Traylor's Brown Pig, drawn on a repurposed Dr Pepper advertisement, is the image used to introduce the show. Materials are just as varied: Jackson Pollock's ink on desk blotter paper, a Niki de Saint Phalle collage, Rosemarie Trockel's photocopied hair with gouache, and David Hammons's Kool-Aid drawing in a terry cloth frame with a raw silk veil.
Several works have Japanese connections. Besides the Utagawa School sheet, there is Yasuo Kuniyoshi's The Wicked Frog (1923, ink), Isamu Noguchi's Female Torso (c. 1928–30, graphite) and a 1999 collage by Ray Yoshida. Stanley Whitney's 2020 untitled drawing is in crayon and graphite on Japanese rice paper, and Elie Nadelman's c. 1915 study sheet was made on a Senda Smile Writing Tablet.
The checklist also includes Alice Neel, Lucian Freud, Robert Gober, Nicole Eisenman, Abraham Walkowitz's six-sheet improvisations on the dancer Martha Graham, and even a Walt Disney Studios study. Painters, sculptors, cartoonists and conceptual artists share the walls. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 AM to 6 PM, which makes it an easy stop on a Chelsea gallery walk.
