Lisson Gallery

Lisson Gallery's Chelsea space at 504 West 24th Street presents Myth Migration, a group exhibition running from November 4, 2026 to January 9, 2027. Its starting point is the change in style that the Cuban-born painter Carmen Herrera underwent after moving to Paris in the late 1940s.

The show looks at 20th-century artists who relocated and spent formative years among new communities of artists and writers. The destinations range from Mexico City and São Paulo to London and New York. Works are grouped by affinity and date from the years of the Second World War and the decades that followed, with each piece marking a new geographic or stylistic horizon.

The participating artists are Herrera, Wifredo Lam, Leonora Carrington, Alice Rahon, Mira Schendel, Chen Kong-Fang, Hélio Oiticica and Huguette Caland. The exhibition moves in and out of Surrealism, Neo-Concretism and Existentialism. Its aim is to trace how each adopted country shaped the development of these artists' practices, and which influences they absorbed.

A notable inclusion is an early figurative work by Herrera that has never been shown before. Herrera is best known for her later, rigorous abstraction, so the piece offers a view of the earlier stage from which that work developed.

The gallery sits in the Chelsea gallery district and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and by appointment. Lisson also operates a second New York space at 508 West 24th Street.
