Brooklyn Museum's Museum on Wheels Takes an Airstream Full of Art Around the Borough

The Brooklyn Museum is taking its programming out of the building again with Museum on Wheels, a mobile arts initiative housed in a custom-designed, brightly colored Airstream trailer. Rather than asking people to come to Eastern Parkway, the trailer goes to them, delivering hands-on cultural and creative experiences in neighborhoods around the borough.

The project debuted last year and drew what the museum describes as an incredible response, which led to a second season. The 2026 run goes from May through October. Reported destinations include Bushwick, Coney Island, Flatbush, Fort Greene, Kensington and Williamsburg, and Brooklyn Paper counts seven neighborhoods in total.

Each stop is built together with local arts and community organizations, and the programming is meant for all ages. Activities include art-making, cultural storytelling and learning exercises inspired by the museum's collection, so the content shifts depending on the partner and the place.

Laval Bryant-Quigley, the museum's director of Community Engagement and Partnerships, told BK Reader that the work is about building lasting relationships between the museum and the people it meets around the borough. By meeting people where they are and reflecting their experiences, she said, the museum can create pathways that go beyond a single visit.
