Atlantic Theater Company in Chelsea has opened its 2026–27 season, a lineup of four world premieres, with I Became We at the Linda Gross Theater. It plays October 16 through November 15.

The premise is a first-person monologue about a woman in her mid-thirties wrestling with one of life's most important decisions. What changes everything is who delivers it: a sixteen-person choir. The language is plainspoken and contemporary, but it is sung in the manner of classical choral music. Atlantic calls the piece formally daring and auto-fictional. In the company's production photos, the singers stand on risers with scores in hand in front of a conductor and a grand piano, with a set of angled wooden house shapes behind them and a line about spending time on Zillow projected overhead.

Mona Pirnot, who wrote I'm Assuming You Know David Greenspan, is the playwright. Jack D. Coen, a Relentless Award-winning composer, wrote the music and also serves as music director and orchestrator; the lyrics are by Pirnot and Coen together. Sarah Benson, who directed The Welkin at Atlantic, directs, and she and Pirnot are both Obie winners. The design team is Mimi Lien (sets), Louisa Thompson and Gylanni Carrington (costumes), Tuce Yasak (lighting), Palmer Hefferan (sound) and Nick Hussong (projections). The choir includes Alison Cheeseman, Neil Netherly and Elizabeth van Os, among others.

The show runs 70 minutes with no intermission. Evening performances start at 7:00 PM, with 2:00 PM matinees on many Saturdays and Sundays and some Wednesdays. As of now, October 23 and 24 have limited availability, and the October 25 matinee is sold out. Every ticket for the October 31 evening show is $31 for Halloween. Audio description is offered on November 12 at 7:00 PM. Access to sold-out performances comes through Atlantic's Patron Program, which starts at a $3,000 donation.

The theater is at 336 West 20th Street. Atlantic's next production, Too Bad For Her, opens January 9, 2027. For anyone after a short, unusual night of theater, a spoken story carried by sixteen singing voices is a distinctive format.
