Ikenobo Ikebana Exhibition Marks 40 Years of the New York Chapter at the Noguchi Museum

The Ikenobo Ikebana Society's New York City chapter is marking its 40th anniversary with a two-day exhibition at The Noguchi Museum in Long Island City. The show fills the Education Studio on Level C with roughly 45 arrangements made by the chapter's masters and members.

The museum frames the presentation around a simple idea: flowers as sculptural expressions of time, place and attentive seeing. That sits comfortably in a museum devoted to Isamu Noguchi, whose stone, metal and wood works also ask viewers to read space, edge and emptiness. Ikebana, built from the line of a branch and the gaps between stems, works with those same concerns on a more fleeting scale. Visitors can pair the arrangements with a walk through the galleries and the garden.

The exhibition ran October 17 from 11am to 6pm and closes today, October 18, with hours of 11am to 5pm. Viewing is included with museum admission. The museum is at 9-01 33rd Road, Long Island City. For Japanese-speaking New Yorkers, it is a chance to see a centuries-old tradition, represented here by one of its best-known schools, shown alongside one of the city's most distinctive artist-designed spaces.
