Ikenobo Ikebana NYC 40th Anniversary Exhibition at The Noguchi Museum

The Noguchi Museum in Long Island City is giving over its Education Studio on Level C this weekend to a special exhibition celebrating 40 years of the Ikenobo Ikebana Society's New York City chapter. It runs just two days: Saturday, October 17, from 11am to 6pm, and Sunday, October 18, from 11am to 5pm.

Ikenobo was founded more than 550 years ago in Kyoto and is regarded as the oldest and most enduring school of ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement. The show brings together roughly 45 arrangements created by the chapter's distinguished masters and members, offering a look at four decades of practice in New York through the flowers themselves.

The pairing with the museum is deliberate. The museum frames ikebana as sharing ground with Isamu Noguchi's sculpture: both treat balance and tension, movement and stillness, as essential elements of composition. Visitors are invited to see the arrangements as sculptural expressions of time, place and attentive seeing, rather than simply as decoration.

With such a short run, it works well as a weekend outing. Pair it with a walk through the museum's galleries and garden, and you get two perspectives on Japanese-rooted form in a single visit: one carved in stone and metal, the other made of living, seasonal material that will not look the same again.
