Jutta Koether, the German artist who has long worked in New York, presents tRaVeLiNgliGHt at Lévy Gorvy Dayan, 19 East 64th Street on the Upper East Side. The exhibition opens November 4 and continues through December 19, 2026.
Koether was born in Cologne in 1958. She is best known as a painter whose practice also reaches into performance, music and critical writing. She wrote for German art and music publications and was part of the Cologne art scene of the 1980s before settling in New York. Her paintings are rarely treated as self-contained objects. She tends to link them to space, to staging and to other works, so that the act of painting itself stays open and in motion. That approach has kept her an influential figure for younger painters.
The title is spelled with alternating upper- and lower-case letters, a typographic device that echoes the phrase "traveling light." The play on the written word suits an artist who has always moved between image and text. The gallery's page lists the title, artist and dates, and the specific works are best met in the rooms themselves.
Lévy Gorvy Dayan sits in the residential grid of the Upper East Side, a short walk from Madison Avenue's cluster of galleries and from museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Frick Collection and Japan Society. A visit to Koether's show can easily be paired with other stops in the neighborhood.
The six-week run overlaps with the Thanksgiving and holiday season, which makes it convenient for visitors traveling to New York at that time. For anyone interested in how a painter formed in Cologne has shaped a practice in New York, it is a useful opportunity to see her new work in a Manhattan gallery setting.
