Broadway Rhythm Brings Free Lunchtime Music to the Garment District Plazas in NYC

Broadway Rhythm is a free outdoor music series on the Broadway plazas in Midtown Manhattan's Garment District. The Garment District Alliance, the not-for-profit that looks after the neighborhood, presents it. The performers come from MTA Music Under New York, the program behind the live music in the city's subway stations. Here those musicians play above ground instead.

The official page lists the sets as running from noon to 2 PM at no charge. In a July 2026 Instagram post, the Alliance said the series was back with two hours of free live music on its big Broadway plaza, and credited a partnership with MTA Arts & Design.

The programming is broad. The 2025 lineup on the Alliance's site included classical and pop strings, jazz guitar, funky brass, Colombian roots music, New Orleans-style brass bands, opera and folk-fused punk. It also had a Beatles tribute act and a trio built around a double-necked guitar, which gives a sense of how wide the range of subway musicians is.

The plaza itself is set up for a lunch break, with high tables and stools, planters, trees and big blue umbrellas, and patches of green turf. The Alliance also hands out free lemonade on the same plaza. A July post placed it at Broadway and 39th Street, from noon to 2 PM or until supplies run out.

For readers who know New York mainly through its subway platforms, this is a chance to hear some of the same musicians in a daylight setting in the middle of Midtown, a short walk from Times Square.
