Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) in Astoria, Queens, will screen Frank Oz's The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984, 94 minutes, DCP) on Saturday, Nov. 21 and Sunday, Nov. 22, both at 12:30 p.m. in the Redstone Theater. The showings are part of two MoMI series, The Minnellis and Jim Henson's World.
In the film, the Muppets score a hit with their college revue and decide to take it to Broadway. Adjusting to the bustle of New York, Kermit takes a job at a local restaurant while he looks for a producer. The cast is filled with cameos from familiar New Yorkers, including Gregory Hines, Joan Rivers, James Coco, Brooke Shields and Liza Minnelli. It ends with a fantastical and, as MoMI puts it, questionably genuine wedding between Kermit and Miss Piggy. The museum describes it as Oz's first solo-directed film, and points to some of the best songs in the Muppet canon and the "Muppet Babies" sequence that spawned its own mini-franchise.
The feature is preceded by The Muppet Show Episode 414 (1979, 23 minutes), starring Liza Minnelli. It is one of the few episodes that broke the show's usual variety format. Liza plays an actress who hires private eye Kermit to solve a backstage crime after her show at the Roxy is threatened by an anonymous culprit. Between the intrigue she performs several musical numbers.
Tickets are $17.50 general, $12 for seniors and students, $10 for youth, and free for MoMI members. Online purchases carry a $1.50 per-ticket transaction fee. Admission can be applied toward a same-day membership purchase. Tickets are picked up at the museum's admissions desk on arrival, and seating is general admission. Gothamist included the screening in its roundup of November films in New York.
MoMI is at 36-01 35 Ave, Astoria. Museum hours are Thursday 2–6 p.m., Friday 2–8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m.–6 p.m.
