The Mori Art Museum, on the 53rd floor of Roppongi Hills Mori Tower in Tokyo, opens "Mariko Mori: All That Shines" on Oct. 31 and keeps it on view through March 28, 2027. It is Japan's first major retrospective of the artist since "Mariko Mori: Pure Land" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in 2002.

About 40 works span more than three decades and every medium Mori has worked in: performance-based photography and video, computer-imaged pictures, drawing, sculpture and large interactive installations. The show follows her path from the mid-1990s "Cyborg" series, which dealt with anime culture, gender and post-humanism, toward Buddhist ideas of life, death and the cosmos, and the concept of "Oneness," the interconnection of all life.

Among the highlights is "Wave UFO" (1999–2002), the first artwork to use brainwave bio-feedback. Entry into the pod is limited by time slot. Also included is "Tom Na H-iu" (2006), which renders neutrinos from supernova explosions as flashes of light. The outdoor works "Primal Rhythm: Sun Pillar" (2011) and "Ring: One with Nature" (2016), both aligned with the winter solstice sun, are part of the story as well.

New York has a direct stake in the show. The museum organized it in collaboration with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, and it is co-curated by Alexandra Munroe, the Guggenheim's Senior Curator at Large, Global Arts, and Mami Kataoka, director of the Mori Art Museum.

The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and until 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, with last admission 30 minutes before closing. Weekday adult tickets are ¥2,800 (¥2,600 online) and weekend or holiday tickets are ¥3,000 (¥2,800). Junior high students and younger enter free. Timed tickets are sold through the museum's booking site and partners including Klook, and the advance discount applies to purchases made by Oct. 30.
