Symphony Space on the Upper West Side will mark the centennial of John Coltrane's birth with "Coltrane 100," a one-night concert on Friday, Nov. 20, at 7pm in the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre, 2537 Broadway at 95th Street.
The lineup brings together five acclaimed musicians: Joe Lovano, Melissa Aldana, Leo Genovese, Linda May Han Oh and Jeff "Tain" Watts. The venue describes the evening as a powerful tribute to one of jazz's most transformative voices, honoring Coltrane's influence across generations, cultures and musical traditions.
The program is expected to run 90 minutes. Tickets are $35 to $65 and are sold through the Symphony Space website. The box office can be reached at 212-864-5400.
Symphony Space is a non-profit performing arts organization presenting music, literature, film, family programming and arts education. It notes that ticket sales cover less than a quarter of its costs, with the rest supported by donations and membership.
For jazz listeners, a centennial night built around a rhythm section and two saxophone voices of this caliber is a natural way to spend a November Friday uptown. With only one performance scheduled, anyone planning to go may want to book ahead.
