On the Upper West Side, NYC: "The Dog Show: Come. Sit. Stay" Runs at Triad Theater Through Nov. 29

The Dog Show: Come. Sit. Stay, a new comedy, is playing at the Triad Theater on the Upper West Side. Performances began October 13, and the final date on the current schedule is a matinee on November 29.

The writer is David Javerbaum, a 13-time Emmy winner and two-time Grammy winner who served as executive producer and head writer of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and wrote An Act of God, starring Jim Parsons. Richard Israel directs.

The piece is a series of monologues spoken from the dogs' point of view. What do dogs really think about baths, about riding with their heads out a car window, about working as police dogs, and about sniffing another dog's behind? Through these imagined voices, the show looks at dogs, at people, and at the way the two see themselves in each other. Javerbaum says the idea came from watching his Maltipoo, Maggie, at his desk.

The staging is deliberately spare, modeled on Love Letters: actors, stools, music stands, sound cues and a photo of each dog. Scripts are held, not memorized, so the words stay in front. Javerbaum describes the show as a study in character rather than animal behavior.

The cast rotates by date. Listed appearances include Scott Adsit (Nov. 3, 4 and 6), Todd Cervaris (multiple dates from Nov. 6 to 22), Danielle Ferland (Nov. 24, 25, 28 and 29), Julia Murney (multiple dates through Nov. 6) and Seth Rudetsky (Nov. 3, 4, 24 and 25). Showtimes include evenings at 7:00, 7:30 and 9:30 PM and matinees at 2:30 PM. Tickets are sold through the show's website, and a promo code offers 25% off.
