Quatuor Danel Opened the Peoples' Symphony Concerts Season in Chelsea, NYC

Peoples' Symphony Concerts, the long-running New York presenter of affordable chamber music, opened its 2026-27 season with the French-Belgian Quatuor Danel. The concert took place on Saturday, October 17, at 7:30pm at the High School of Fashion Industries, 225 W 24th St between 7th and 8th Avenues in Chelsea. It was part of the Mann Series.

The quartet was founded in 1991 and has played in its current lineup since cellist Yovan Markovitch joined in 2014. The members are Marc Danel and Gilles Millet on violin, Vlad Bogdanas on viola and Markovitch on cello. They perform on major stages worldwide and have made a series of ground-breaking recordings over three decades. Their musical partners include Leif Ove Andsnes, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, Alexander Melnikov, Adrien La Marca, Clemens Hagen and the Borodin Quartet. The group is known for bold, focused readings of the string quartet cycles of Beethoven, Shostakovich and Weinberg, and its lively, fresh approach to the traditional quartet repertoire has won praise from audiences and the press. The official page carried a line from the Times of London describing "such exquisite delicacy, such roaring fury."

The program paired Weinberg's Quartet No. 2, Op. 3 with Shostakovich's Quartet No. 8 before a 20-minute intermission. After the break came Beethoven's Quartet in F Major, Op. 59, No. 1. The evening ran about two hours, including the intermission. Hearing Weinberg and Shostakovich side by side was a draw for anyone interested in Russian-tradition repertoire.

Tickets were $25 for reserved front seating, $20 for general admission and $10 for students. Mann Series subscribers paid as little as $9.33 for this concert. A virtual version of the concert streams from Monday, October 19 through Saturday, October 24 for those who could not attend in person.
