The Air Jordan 9 first appeared in the early 1990s, when Michael Jordan swapped basketball courts for baseball diamonds. Now the model returns as a rugged boot. The Air Jordan 9 Retro Boot "Anthracite" went on sale on Nike.com on October 16.

The upper is dark grey leather with suede touches. The details that define the AJ9 are all still here: the minimalist leather upper, the "one-pull" lacing system and the jagged midsole. A high collar wraps the ankle, and the laces and other details are reflective, so they shimmer when light hits them.

Nike lists real and synthetic leather in the upper for durability and structure. Nike Air technology cushions each step, and a rubber outsole provides traction. The boot is not intended for use as personal protective equipment.

It retails for $240. For New Yorkers who face slush and icy sidewalks every winter and want a boot that carries sneaker-culture credentials, it is a practical option. Nike Members get free standard shipping on orders of $50 or more and free 60-day returns, and pickup is available at select Nike stores.
