Craig McDean, the British-born fashion photographer who is based in New York, is showing new work at UNDER R TOKYO in Sendagaya from Friday, October 23, to Friday, November 6. UNDER R is a concept store that carries on the style of Ron Herman and grows through art, music and fashion, aimed at a younger generation.

McDean came up in the early 1990s through culture magazines such as i-D and The Face. Since then he has shot advertising campaigns and editorials for brands including CHANEL, JIL SANDER and Calvin Klein. His subject this time is Ducati, and specifically the 750 Supersport Green Frame.

The bike descends from a racer with a 750cc L-twin engine, developed in the early 1970s by Ducati's chief designer, Fabio Taglioni. It debuted at the 1972 Imola 200 Miles and took first and second place in that first race. Only 401 road-going Green Frame models were built. The 1974 750 Supersport has a single seat, an intake system without an air filter, open exhausts, triple disc brakes and the desmodromic valve system, and it was assembled by hand, one bike at a time. For this project McDean photographed two rare examples, recording their form, their history and the craftsmanship behind them.
At the store, a photo book of the same name, 750 SUPER SPORT, sells for ¥9,350. Its gray cover carries overlapping photographs of the bike. A collaborative apparel capsule with UNDER R comes in white or black, sizes S to XL. The short-sleeve tee is ¥8,800 and the long-sleeve is ¥12,100. The short-sleeve tee prints a tall photograph of the overlapping bike on the front, while the long-sleeve uses a large vertical image of the bike seen from directly above. Some versions carry the text "750 Super Sport" and "THE GREEN FRAME" on the chest or back.
A free reception takes place on opening night, October 23, from 6 to 8 p.m., and McDean will attend. UNDER R TOKYO is at 2-6-3 Sendagaya, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, 1F, and is open from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; the phone number is 03-6804-1519. For New Yorkers with Tokyo plans, or anyone following McDean's work, it is a chance to see this series in person.
