New Balance has given its 2010 a weatherproof upgrade. The new GORE-TEX version keeps the chunky dad-shoe profile but wraps it in a waterproof, breathable upper, and it is now at select retailers.
The 2010 arrived last year alongside the 2000, both built on ABZORB cushioning. According to Sneaker Freaker, it is a homage to the NB 1000 and 900 running lines. Senior Creative Design Manager Sam Pearce described it as taking the core proportions of the 990 lineage while drawing its inspiration from the 1000 series of the 2000s, refining that layered, hypertech look into a more elevated lifestyle design. The shoe has since picked up collaborations with Kith, Joe Freshgoods and Rich Paul.
On the GORE-TEX pair, Highsnobiety points to matte leather and mesh textures over the signature chunky sole with ABZORB cushioning. Colorways include an earthy Light Mushroom, a neon and an all-black option.
The neon version, which Sneaker Freaker calls Neon Green, uses a vivid green mesh with tonal green suede overlays. Its midsole carries ABZORB SBS cushioning plus a stability web in the midfoot, and the entire shoe is encased in GORE-TEX. When Sneaker Freaker covered it in early September, no release date had been given for that colorway, though the outlet expected it before year's end.
Footshop in Europe lists the GORE-TEX 2010 in Light Mushroom/Timberwolf at €190, roughly $212. No New York stockist or address has been named for the shoe.
For Japanese readers, the 2010 is a good example of New Balance's recent push into chunky, early-2000s-inspired running silhouettes. This version adds practical rain protection to a design that Highsnobiety's writer says "can do no wrong."
