The New York City Council plans to question officials in the Mamdani administration about a $650 million plan for the Hunts Point Produce Market in the Bronx that has collapsed The plan was released under former Mayor Eric Adams. Council Speaker Julie Menin has called the project "mission critical." Lawmakers are expected to press city officials on why the deal fell apart and what comes next for the market's future. The Hunts Point Produce Market is the city's hub for fresh produce, with a history stretching back more than 200 years Today it covers over 1 million square feet and houses more than 30 family-owned produce merchants, many of whom have worked in the trade for generations They sell conventional and organic fruits and vegetables, along with specialty items, to restaurants, grocers and other buyers across the region. The market also works with food charities, including City Harvest, Feeding Westchester and the Food Bank, as part of its giving programs It is located at 772 Edgewater Road in the Bronx. Because so much of the city's restaurant and grocery supply passes through Hunts Point, decisions about the facility's future reach well beyond the neighborhood That includes the many Japanese restaurants and food shops around New York that depend on the regional produce chain The Council's questioning will be an early test of how the new administration handles one of the city's largest food-infrastructure projects.
