Norte, a new Mexican steakhouse built around northern Mexico's open-fire cooking, is set to open October 29 at 39 West 19th Street in Flatiron. Behind it are Alberto Martínez, known for Cuerno, and chef Oriol Mendivil.

The restaurant calls itself a neighborhood Mexican steakhouse, and the menu centers on carne asada, tacos de trompo, chicharrón, and fresh seafood and fish. The carne asada tradition of the north is a gathering ritual as much as a meal, and the official site puts it plainly: "Fire is the ritual. Community is the language."

That framing suggests something more relaxed than the usual steakhouse formula. The idea is a place close to home where grilled meat, trompo tacos and shared plates sit at the center of the table, rather than a white-tablecloth occasion.

The location puts Norte within easy walking distance of Union Square and Chelsea, which makes it a practical after-work or group-dinner option. The restaurant is on Instagram at @nortenyc, and its website is available in English and Spanish. For New Yorkers who already know Mexican food by its regional tacos and mariscos, a kitchen focused squarely on fire-cooked northern specialties adds a distinct voice to the neighborhood.
