Astronomy on Tap NYC, a monthly bar night mixing science talks with games, reaches its 180th edition tonight, October 20. It takes place at Somethin' Else, the bar inside DeKalb Market Hall in Downtown Brooklyn. Professional scientists and educators give the talks, and the evening also includes trivia and prizes. Admission is free.

This month's theme is "The Dark Night," and it centers on why dark skies matter to astronomers and to people in general. Kristina Gatto of NOVA will speak about how light pollution affects astronomy and astronomers. Steve Mariconda, president of the northern New Jersey chapter of DarkSky International, will cover light pollution's effects on ecosystems, human health and public safety, along with regional efforts to pass policy that promotes responsible lighting.

The lineup also includes Julie Congress, Jordan Barron, Rachael Richman and Aubrey Lace Taylor of No.11 Productions. They will give a sneak peek of their new play, Starstuff, which opens later this month at 59E59. The organizers say the code "AOTStar" gets $30 seats.

Per the organizers, Somethin' Else sits in the DeKalb Market next to the Escape Room and across from the Jamaican spot. Guests can buy food from the market and bring it into the bar. Doors open at 7:00 pm and the program starts at 7:15 pm, with the event listed until 9:00 pm. Arriving early is the way to get a seat and a drink before the talks begin.

The NYC series runs on the third Tuesday of each month, and the Astronomy on Tap format has spread to cities around the world. RSVPs are handled through a page on weeknights.co.
