Two Nordic design houses, Byredo and Iittala, have released LJUS, a home collection in glass that goes on sale worldwide today, October 16. Iittala describes it as a meeting of makers united by craftsmanship and by a shared interest in glass, light and a sensorial approach to modern culture. "Ljus" is the Swedish word for light.
The collection has five objects: a candle stand, a candle ornament, a light refractor, an incense holder and a vessel for a fragrance diffuser. Each is handcrafted at Iittala's factory in Finland. Together they cover scent, flame and glass in a single tabletop setting.
On Iittala.com, prices in euros are as follows. The candle stand (125 x 26 mm) is €180, the candle ornament (115 x 52 mm) is €200, the incense holder (160 x 26 mm) is €220, the fragrance diffuser vessel (137 x 150 mm) is €290, and the light refractor (175 x 210 mm) is €350.
The pieces are sold through Iittala stores, Iittala.com and Byredo's direct-to-consumer channels. For New Yorkers, the range works as holiday gifting or as a way to set up a quiet, scented corner at home as the evenings darken. The restrained glass forms will also appeal to anyone who likes the pared-back aesthetics associated with Japanese design.
