NYC Parks held its Haunted House and Hallow Gala on Friday, October 30, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center, 3105 Farragut Place in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. Admission was free, and no registration was required.
The program centered on a haunted house and a spooky carnival. Families could also join arts and crafts, games, music and pumpkin decorating, and take part in costume and dance contests. If it rained, the gala was set to move indoors.
The gala was one piece of HalloWeek, a weeklong celebration at the center. Other activities during the week included karaoke, a pool movie, a silent disco and additional haunted house programming.
The Brooklyn event was among a series of free fall festivals and Halloween gatherings that NYC Parks and recreation centers staged across all five boroughs in October. Others included Hallowscream at J. Hood Wright Recreation Center in Manhattan, the Williamsbridge Fall Fiesta in the Bronx, the Ocean Breeze Fall Festival on Staten Island, and the Mad Monster Lab Haunted House and Fall Festival at Bowne Park Field House in Queens. Each leaned on pumpkin patches, crafts, games and haunted attractions.
In Brooklyn, the Friday late-afternoon slot gave families a neighborhood option for Halloween weekend, with the haunted house and contests running at a public recreation center.
