Materials for the Arts (MFTA), the reuse program run by the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, is adding a dedicated shopping day for artists who have received support from local arts councils. Beginning in October 2026, it will take place on the second Monday of each month, except holidays. The city describes it as extra support for grantees' creative practice and their engagement with New Yorkers.
The new day arrives alongside a larger change to city artist funding. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and DCLA Commissioner Diya Vij announced that grants for local artists will rise from a previous maximum of $5,000 to up to $10,000, the first increase in nearly two decades. DCLA funds re-grant partners in each borough, and those partners distribute the money to artists, collectives and small nonprofits.
Access runs through those partners. Artist grantees book their MFTA appointments through their local arts council, and DCLA lists a contact for each borough. In the Bronx, current Bronx Council on the Arts grantees email tracey@bronxarts.org. In Brooklyn, Brooklyn Arts Council grantees write to grants@brooklynartscouncil.org. Queens Arts Fund grantees, administered by the New York Foundation for the Arts, use apply@nyfa.org. Staten Island Arts grantees contact Gena Mimozo at gmimozo@statenislandarts.org. Manhattan Arts Grants recipients funded by DCLA through the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council are pointed to lmcc.website/MFTA.
Artists who are not yet grantees can still apply in most boroughs. The Bronx Council on the Arts deadline is October 30, 2026, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's is November 12, and the New York Foundation for the Arts' Queens deadline is November 17. Staten Island Arts opens applications in November 2026. Brooklyn Arts Council's deadline was October 11.
The shopping day is for grantees rather than the general public, and it follows the booking route above. For artists working in New York, it adds a source of free materials to a grant that has now doubled at its upper limit.
