Danish design brand Gubi has brought back the Lotus Table Lamp, a piece the Murano glassmaker Carlo Nason designed in 1969. It had been out of production for more than 50 years, and Gubi's US site now lists it as new.
The shade is the point. Four nested layers of mouth-blown glass form a shape that recalls a lotus flower, which is where the name comes from. Each element is made with the "pulegoso" technique, which gives the glass a semi-opaque, bubbled texture. Because the layers hide the bulb, the light reads as a soft, diffused glow rather than a point source. The lamps are handmade, so thickness, curvature and the way light spreads vary slightly from one to the next.
Gubi developed the reissue with Nason's son, Alberto Nason. He calls bringing his father's best-known work back into production emotional and inspiring. Carlo Nason (1935–2026) was born in Murano into one of its oldest glassmaking families. Over five decades he made more than 1,000 objects, from lamps and vases to sculptural work, and became one of the most prolific names in mid-century Italian glass.
The version shown on Gubi's US site pairs the Bubble Glass shade with a Black Chrome base. It costs $5,499 excluding VAT and is listed as in stock. You can add it to your cart on the site, and Gubi's retailer finder lists stores that carry the brand. For New Yorkers who want a piece of mid-century Murano craft in the home, it is a considered, collectible purchase.
