Slo Slo Studio, a ceramics studio, ran a one-off workshop called Bookends Handbuilding on October 18. Participants made their own ceramic bookends using handbuilding techniques, shaping the clay by hand rather than on a wheel.
Handbuilding covers methods such as working slabs, stacking coils or pulling a form from a single lump of clay. A bookend is a useful subject for it. It has to hold up a row of books, so the maker thinks about weight and balance as well as looks, and the finished piece doubles as a small object on a shelf.
The class was set up as a single session and was booked through the studio's online class page. That session has now taken place.
One-off classes like this give newcomers a way to try clay without committing to a multi-week course, and let more experienced makers take on a specific project in a single sitting. Other one-off sessions are listed on the studio's classes page.
