The Future Perfect, the design gallery on Great Jones Street in NoHo, has opened "Immaculate Object," an exhibition devoted entirely to the holiday ornament. It runs from November 2, 2026 through January 1, 2027, and treats the familiar tree decoration as a form of contemporary design.
The show brings together 328 ornaments by emerging and established makers. From the gallery's own roster come Chris Wolston, Karl Zahn, Bethan Laura Wood, Bower Studios, Ben Barber, Chen Chen and Kai Williams, Rachel Schillander, Mark Pavlovits and Mary Wallis. Alice Tedesco, Courtney Duncan, Stefanie Haining and Theo A. Rosenblum are also included. Japanese glass and craft followers will notice Gensuke Kishi, whose "Resonant Branch 1" is on view.
The range is wide. Playful puppets and fantastical, neo-grotesque vegetable forms sit alongside luminous glass, and the tone shifts from mischievous to refined. A large share of the works were chosen from an open call, which puts newer names beside established ones. The shared question is what scale and material can do in an object small enough to hang from a branch.
Pieces are available in limited editions and as one-of-a-kind works. Examples listed with the show include Anna Gukov's "Tassel" at $90, Stefanie Haining's "Baby It's Cold Outside" at $850 and Laetitia Baqué and Victor Molinié's "Sphère" at $3,600. A snowy Tokyo vending machine by madebypang is among them.
Laura Young, the gallery's Managing Director, describes a weakness for objects that fit in the palm and bring whimsy and wonder, and calls the exhibition a personal favorite. The framing is that an ornament can be something to collect, give and keep year after year.
