New York Road Runners is marking 50 years of the marathon's five-borough course with an interactive pop-up in Vanderbilt Hall at Grand Central Terminal. The race moved beyond Central Park and into all five boroughs in 1976, and this year's event celebrates that milestone just ahead of Marathon Sunday on November 1.

The installation lets visitors walk the route without leaving the terminal. Experiences are organized by borough and follow the marathon course from Staten Island through Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx to Manhattan. The organizers also list DJ music, a projected name wall and giveaways among the attractions.

There is a collective goal, too. NYRR is counting visitors' steps over the four days of the event, aiming for 1,976,000 in total, a number that nods to 1976. The name projection wall runs daily from noon to 2 p.m.: names beginning with A through K appear during the first hour, and L through Z during the second.

The pop-up opened on Tuesday, October 27. It continues Wednesday through Friday, October 28 to 30, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. It sits inside Grand Central in Midtown, so it can be reached from the terminal's concourse.

The marathon itself takes place on Sunday, November 1, with close to 60,000 runners expected from around the world. NYRR has built a full week of programming around the anniversary, including Kids Kickoff youth events held in all five boroughs on the weekend of October 24 and 25. For visitors from Japan who are in town to watch or cheer, this is a quick way to get a sense of the course and its neighborhoods before race day.
