James Turrell at Almine Rech New York: A 13th Solo Show in Tribeca

Almine Rech New York will present James Turrell's 13th solo exhibition with the gallery, running from November 12, 2026 to January 30, 2027 at 361 Broadway in Tribeca. An opening reception takes place on Thursday, November 12, from 6 to 8 pm. The show marks more than three decades of collaboration between the artist and the gallery.

Turrell has worked with light as his material since the 1960s and is a leading figure of the Southern California Light and Space movement. His output ranges from sculpted blocks of light that appear solid, to rooms filled with slowly shifting color, to architecture altered to frame the changing sky. Whatever the form, each work sets up a contemplative, sensory environment and turns attention toward the act of seeing itself.

The exhibition brings together more than fifteen works. It includes a Shallow Space, several pieces from the Glassworks series, and a Cross Corner work. Each is a new addition to a body of work that has defined Turrell's career, and together they continue his long inquiry into space, light and the viewer's own perception.

The relationship between artist and gallery goes back to 1989, when Almine Rech organized Turrell's first gallery exhibition in Europe at her Paris space. That show presented a Light Piece titled Blood Lust. The New York presentation points to that history and to Turrell's lasting focus on perception as the center of his practice.

The exhibition page also shows Raemar, Blue (1969), an early light work from the Tate Americas Foundation collection, a reminder of how far back Turrell's investigation of light reaches. Works like these depend on time spent in front of them, so a slow visit suits the show.
