Hyperallergic, the New York-based art publication, is throwing its annual Halloween party tonight, Wednesday, October 28, at 7:00pm. The venue is Oberon, which the magazine describes as Brooklyn's newest queer haven, at 196 N 10th St. The event is billed as a member event and brings together Hyperallergic members, contributors and staff.
The program centers on an open bar with spooky cocktails and snacks, plus an Art Costume Competition. Attendees are invited to dress as their most inspired art-related idea. Hyperallergic's Hrag Vartanian emcees. The judges are art critic Aruna D'Souza, artist Jia Song, and Nicholas D. Lowry, president of Swann Auction Galleries and a frequent guest expert on Antiques Roadshow.
The magazine has also published a roundup of last year's winning costumes. It includes a committed reenactment of René Magritte's "Lovers" and what the editors call an, um, conceptual tribute to Relational Aesthetics. That gives a sense of the register: art-history references played for laughs.
Tickets are $40 and include the open bar. Paid Hyperallergic members pay $20. Tickets are sold through Luma.
For Japanese readers, the evening is a look at how a leading New York art outlet gathers its community: critics, artists and an auction-house president judging costumes in a Brooklyn bar, one night before the weekend's Halloween build-up.
