Marian Goodman Gallery is presenting a solo exhibition of new work by the British sculptor Tony Cragg at its Tribeca space, 385 Broadway. It is the gallery's seventeenth show with the artist and the first in this location. Sculptures in bronze, wood, stone and steel fill three floors through October 24, 2026.
Cragg was born in Liverpool in 1949 and has lived in Wuppertal, Germany, since 1977. He represented Britain at the 1988 Venice Biennale and won the Turner Prize the same year. His other honors include the Praemium Imperiale in Tokyo (2007) and a knighthood (2016). This year he received the European Culture Prize, presented in Amsterdam on September 4. He taught at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1979 and served as its rector from 2009 to 2013.
Versus, a 2018 bronze built from shifting elliptical forms, greets visitors at the entrance. On the first floor, two Corten steel works, Path (2026) and Recall (2025), suggest material piling up and cascading. Path can be read as a fountain, a waterfall or a road. Three Stand sculptures rest on tripod feet and resemble a torso or a cliff, each cast from a carved original. Over the Earth (2026), a bronze with a muscular horizontal form stretched overhead, evokes wings, arms or branches. Stack, a large wooden work, continues the stacking technique Cragg has used since the early 1970s, with its suggestion of growth and time. In No Time (2018) is a bronze of inclined, overlapping columns.
The third floor centers on the Symmetries, which began as axial line drawings mirrored into columns. They look anatomical, though Cragg was not trying to depict the human body. The stone Integers merge unlike forms into one whole. The Masks, first conceived for a theatre project, slide two Janus masks into one another in bog oak and stone, producing composite faces that hover between discord and harmony. Incidents, cast in Corten steel from carved originals, depart from the tradition of steel sculpture built from sheets, rods and beams, and they appear to defy gravity. Eclipse, carved in wood, shifts between figuration and abstraction as the viewer circles it. Stroke, a bronze named after a Roy Lichtenstein brushstroke painting, links the sculptural process to Cragg's gestural drawings.
The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm.
