Balloon Museum has put down permanent roots in Manhattan. Its first U.S. flagship is now at the Tin Building, 96 South St, in the Seaport district, and it is the brand's first permanent home for inflatable art.
The opening exhibition is DAYDREAM – Air Becomes Art. Its starting idea is the moment when reality gives way to imagination. Air, light, sound and movement are the materials, and the environments are built to be touched, walked through and shared rather than viewed from a distance. Visitors become active participants in the work.
The lineup includes internationally known artists, among them Marina Abramović. Balloon Museum exhibitions around the world have drawn more than 8 million visitors, and the New York space is the first to be permanent.
The show is suitable for all ages. That makes it an easy pick for families, and for anyone who finds conventional galleries intimidating, since it approaches contemporary art through play and discovery.
Tickets are sold on the official site. A Flex Ticket allows entry with no fixed date or time, which helps if your schedule is uncertain. The site is also promoting 30% off Daydream tickets. Group bookings and private events are handled through a dedicated email address listed there.
The Seaport location pairs easily with a walk along the East River or a meal at the Tin Building, so the exhibition fits into a half-day outing downtown.
