The New Museum's Atrium Stair is a project space built into the staircase of the museum's open atrium. The current presentation, which opened on March 21, 2026, belongs to Klára Hosnedlová, an artist from the Czech Republic. It runs until March 22, 2028, far longer than a typical museum show, so it can be visited at almost any point over two years.
Hosnedlová was born in 1990 and works in Berlin. She is known for immersive installations that combine embroidery and other textile work, ceramics and architectural materials. Her practice moves between the body, built space and craft, and her pieces often blur the line between sculpture and environment.
The setting is the New Museum at 235 Bowery on the Lower East Side, a leading institution for contemporary art in the city. Its stacked-box building was designed by the Japanese firm SANAA, which gives Japanese visitors an extra reason to see the architecture alongside the art. A staircase is a place people pass through, so the work is experienced in motion. Its appearance shifts as you climb or descend, rather than being read from a single fixed viewpoint in a gallery.
Because the run is so long, a visit can easily be paired with another exhibition in the museum, or repeated in a different season. It also fits naturally into a day of gallery-hopping around the Lower East Side.
