Kent Monkman: Officer and Laughing Girl

Canadian artist Kent Monkman, whose work reexamines European art history from an Indigenous perspective, shows new paintings in the Frick's small Cabinet Gallery. The series responds to the Frick's Vermeer, Officer and Laughing Girl, asking how Dutch art of that era reflected global trade and colonization. Monkman's alter ego Miss Chief guides a imagined history of five centuries of encounters. Visitors can then walk to the South Hall to see the Vermeer itself.
