Siena: The Art of Bronze, 1450–1500
Francesco di Giorgio (1439–1501), Deposition of Christ from the Cross with a Group of Donors (Federico da Montefeltro and His Family) (detail), 1473–74, medium-tin bronze and elevated antimony, Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo (Carmini), Venice. © The Frick Collection — The Frick Collection

This is the first exhibition to treat Siena as a major center of Renaissance bronze sculpture. Nearly forty works, including statues, reliefs, candelabra and medals, are on view, some never before shown outside Tuscany. Pieces by Donatello, Vecchietta and Francesco di Giorgio illustrate both the beauty of the medium and the technical and political obstacles Sienese bronzeworkers faced. Giulio Dalvit, the Frick's associate curator, organized the show.
