The Palm Court at The Plaza has a limited-run afternoon tea built around HBO's The Gilded Age. Called the High Society Tea with The Gilded Age, it runs through November 10 and aims to capture the glamour, ambition and elegance of New York's best-known era.

Tea is served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with arrivals in three windows, each offered in 15-minute steps: 11 to 11:30 a.m., 1:15 to 1:45 p.m., and 3:30 to 4 p.m. Reservations are made on OpenTable, or by phone at 212-546-5300. Cancellations within 72 hours and no-shows are charged $75 per person to the card on file, and cancellations must be made through OpenTable.

The room asks guests to dress for the occasion. Shorts, beach attire, men's sleeveless shirts, men's open-toed shoes, casual hats, ripped denim and athletic wear are not allowed, and the hotel says anyone not sufficiently well presented may be refused entry.

The setting is a large part of the appeal. The Palm Court opened in 1907 and has served as a backdrop in novels and films, most famously F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Architect Thierry Despont renovated it, drawing on nearby Central Park with potted plants, ceiling-high palms, trellis detailing and cane-accented furniture. Its signature feature is a soaring stained-glass dome reminiscent of the 1907 original. The hotel's regular afternoon tea draws on a 25-variety Palais des Thés collection. The executive chef is Muhannad Al Ateem, born and raised in Jordan, whose career includes stints at The Carlyle in New York and several Four Seasons, Fairmont and Ritz-Carlton properties.

The Plaza is at 768 Fifth Avenue. The Palm Court is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to midnight, with afternoon tea in the middle of the day.
