Lookout: Coil + Drift Lighting Exhibition at Colony

Colony is showing Lookout, an exhibition of new lighting by Coil + Drift, through October 21. It brings together two just-launched collections, Touch and Strut, in a single room.

The studio is led by John Sorensen-Jolink, a former modern dancer who founded Coil + Drift in 2016 and works from New York's Catskill Mountains. He describes design as choreographing objects and space, and the studio's materials include brass, sand-cast metal, hand-blown glass and domestic hardwoods. Every piece is made by in-house artisans and local craftspeople.

The show is built around two opposite ways of experiencing light: one draws the eye to a single point, the other spreads outward and envelops the room. The fixtures are sculptural, combining brass or steel with wood and finished with linen shades, so they read as objects in their own right as well as working lights.

Coil + Drift has just joined Colony's permanent roster of independent designers, and Colony has long championed such studios for the American market. Lookout runs from October 9 to 21, Monday through Friday, noon to 6 p.m. With the closing date near, anyone interested in lighting or interiors should visit soon.
