Smith Street in Brooklyn will host the Neighbors & Makers Fair on Saturday, October 17, running from 10am to 6pm. It is organized by MOSS BKLYN, the community group behind a run of Smith Street activities, and is presented as a way to bring new life to the Smith Street Fair.
The day centers on local makers and neighborhood businesses set up along the street. A kid zone and music are part of the program, and both run throughout the day. It is the kind of event where you can wander the length of the street, pick up handmade goods, and talk to the people who made them.
MOSS BKLYN has been active on the street for much of the year. It holds retailer socials for its members at Smith Street venues, and it has organized community clean-up days with neighbors. The fair fits that pattern, giving shop owners and residents another occasion to meet in the same place. A holiday event is also set for December 5, with a tree lighting at 4pm at the corner of Bergen Street and Smith Street, plus sips, snacks and carolers.
For Japanese readers living in or visiting New York, this is a relaxed way to see a local Brooklyn street at its most social. Smith Street is lined with independent shops and restaurants, so it is easy to combine browsing the fair with a coffee or a meal. A Saturday daytime visit gives you plenty of time to walk the street and take in the makers' tables at your own pace.
